Best Seasons to Visit

Spring (April-May) and Summer (June-August) offer the most pleasant weather for exploring the clifftop site. Autumn (September-October) provides a wonderfully atmospheric and moody experience, perfect for photographers. The town is famously busy during the biannual Whitby Goth Weekend.

What to Wear

Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are essential as the ground is uneven and you will be on your feet for a while.|Wear layers of clothing, including a windproof or waterproof jacket, as the weather on the headland can change very quickly and is often windy, even on sunny days.|Bring a hat and sunscreen in the summer, as there is very little shade within the abbey grounds.

Planning

Historical Context

Founded in 657 AD by St Hilda, Whitby Abbey was originally a double monastery for both men and women. It gained prominence as the host of the Synod of Whitby in 664 AD, a landmark event that determined the future of the English Church. The original Anglo-Saxon monastery was destroyed by Viking raids in the 9th century and was later refounded as a Benedictine house after the Norman Conquest. The magnificent Gothic ruins we see today date from the 13th century. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 and fell into ruin, its stone later quarried for local buildings.

Photography Tips

  • Golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) provides the most dramatic light and shadows.
  • Use a polarizing filter to make the blue sky 'pop' behind the pale stone.
  • Experiment with black and white photography to enhance the gothic, moody atmosphere.
  • Don't be afraid to shoot in 'bad' weather – mist and clouds can make for incredibly atmospheric photos of the abbey.

Insider Tips

  • Listen for the bells of St Mary's Church next door; they add to the incredible atmosphere.
  • Use the audio guide! It's included with your ticket and offers fascinating stories you would otherwise miss.
  • After your visit, walk through the graveyard of St Mary's Church to find the graves of sailors and whalers, which adds context to Whitby's maritime history.
  • If you're fit, climb the 199 steps from the town for the full, dramatic approach to the abbey.

Our Partners

Fun Facts

  • The first known poet in the English language, a cowherd named Cædmon, lived at the monastery at Whitby in the 7th century.
  • During World War I, the abbey was shelled by the German Navy, causing significant damage to the west front.
  • Whitby Abbey has been used as a navigational landmark for sailors for over a thousand years.

Magnifique et Historique

Un lieu chargé d'histoire. Les ruines sont spectaculaires et la vue sur la ville de Whitby est superbe. Le guide audio en français était très informatif. Une visite incontournable si vous êtes dans le Yorkshire.

Windy but Wonderful

A very atmospheric place. It was very windy the day we visited, which only added to the gothic feel! The stonework is incredible. The path around the site is easy to follow. A great piece of English history.

Worth the Climb

Those 199 steps are a workout, but the reward at the top is incredible. The abbey is so imposing and beautiful. It's a photographer's dream. Be prepared for changeable weather, it went from sun to rain in minutes!

A Place of Legends

Incredible experience. You can feel the history in the stones. The connection with Dracula is what brought me here, but the real history of the saints and synods was just as interesting. The audio guide was excellent for understanding everything.
